Music Review: Bassnectar

Music styles vary all across the Colorado School of Mines campus. Many students listen to the basic types such as hip-hop, country, metal, rap, oldies, and rock. However, DJ song mixing and techno is beginning to take over many iPods and CD players around campus. Bassnectar is an entertaining and exciting DJ and songwriter that has recently become very popular.

He combines music with hard-hitting beats, various artists, and even clips from other popular songs. One of the best songs is Magical World, featuring famous musician Nelly Furtado. Some of his music collaboration involves artists such as KRS-One, Perry Farrel, Fever Ray, Spearhead, STS9, Buckethead, Tappa Zuki, and Zumbi of Zion I.

Some describe his music as imaginary, filled with basslines, hypnotic, and sonic sounds. The music is very difficult to describe, so it is difficult to tell without actually listening to it whether one will like it or not.

Bassnectar (Lorin Ashton) has the intention of getting massive amounts of people to get together and listen to his music. He likes to do this through concerts, and he recently performed at the First Bank Center in Broomfield, CO. About seven thousand fans were there to see the show. Bassnectar performed for many hours, playing his music while an incredible light show was put on. Fans were swept away by his music, and some described it as a once in a lifetime experience.

However, this concert was only part of his worldwide tour. He will be performing in places from London to Vienna to Dublin. At every concert he performs, he likes to take what he calls a “family photo.” Bassnectar climbs into the audience with his fans, and then a picture is taken of him and his thousands of fans. Bassnectar likes to please his fans and loves to interact with them.

Some of Bassnectar’s newer albums are Art of Revolution (2009), Cozza Frenzy (2009), and Timestretch (2010). Popular songs include “Fun with Synthesizers,” “Underwater,” “Encore,” “The 808 Track,” and “Falling.”
Youtube is a great way to see what his music is like as well as to see the experience of one of his amazing shows.

Those who enjoy Bassnectar should consider other great DJs with the same type of music mixes including Deadmau5, Pretty Lights, Tiesto, and Mimosa.
