Tech Break: Comcast, Verizon and Apple

The last few weeks were relatively busy for the nation’s largest ISP, the nation’s largest wireless provider and the nation’s hottest computer manufacturer, and each company’s announcements had something to do with communications. With Comcast and Apple, the story was about getting data faster. With Verizon, price was a keyword on both ends of the spectrum, thanks to their release of the rather expensive Motorola Xoom tablet and their priced-to-sell landline replacement service.

Athlete of the Week: Russel Drummond, Junior, Track & Field

Russell Drummond, like many Mines students is a quiet kid. He won’t tell you how great he is or trash talk about how fast he can run. He doesn’t need it. But behind his red beard lies an incredible athlete; an athlete that is seeing success everywhere he turns. Drummond runs both track and cross country for Mines and has helped to solidify what is becoming one of the strongest collegiate distance programs in the country. After redshirting his first season, Drummond helped push Mines to a third place finish at the cross country national championships in 2009 (the highest in school history) and a fourth place finish this past fall. At the RMAC Championships on Friday and Saturday, the junior from Eugene, Oregon helped lead the Men’s Distance Medley relay to a second place finish behind powerhouse Adams State, while turning in a third place finish in the mile (4:19.28) to earn Second Team All-RMAC. On March 12 and 13 Drummond will complete his indoor season by traveling to Albuquerque, N.M. for the National Championships in which has provisionally qualified for the championships in the mile and 800m and the distance medley relay. The staple of a CSM student athlete, Drummond is this week’s Athlete of the Week.

Bill Nye (The Science Guy) on a changing world

Dressed in his unmistakable bow tie, engineer, comedian, and pop culture icon Bill Nye brought his unique blend of science and showmanship to the Mackey Auditorium at CU Boulder last Tuesday. Energy in the room was palpable as Nye took the stage; the former 90’s-children’s television-show-host turned director of the Planetary Society received a standing ovation before he began.

What’s Your Beef? 2-28-11

“There has been an unacceptable and possibly dangerous change in the student verification for health insurance policy.  In previous semesters I have been able to get a student verification for health insurance form, to continue my coverage through my father’s health insurance (Rocky Mountain UFCW), filled out in a matter of minutes with a quick look up of my CWID and a stamp.  A change this semester required it to be mailed out and filled out by a national service and then mailed back so that I could pick it up.  Three weeks later it has not returned and my bills for glasses and medical expenses are piling up.  Any policy change that could negatively impact the continuity of health insurance for students is highly inappropriate and possibly dangerous.  I know that I will not be able to be helped, but for future students this policy change must be dealt with aggressively and quickly.”
