Get geared up at Bent Gate Mountaineering

Although Colorado is surround by beautiful wilderness, students often fail to take advantage of what it can offer. Bent Gate Mountaineering helps students utilize Mines’ wonderful location with backpacking, climbing, and skiing gear.

Starting out in a small shop downtown, Bent Gate began in Golden in 1994. Since then, the company has became known statewide for their quality products and knowledgeable staff. Their growth allowed them to expand into their current location at 1313 Washington Avenue (right next to Woody’s) a few years ago. The store offers a large selection of any type of gear you need. Although the store carries popular brands such as Black Diamond, La Sportiva, Prana, and K2, Bent Gate also focuses on quality products from smaller, local companies. Fly Low and DPS Skis, new ski companies still building their reputation, are seen on Bent Gate’s shelves and are strongly recommended by the staff. Bent Gate also proudly carries Icelandic snowboards that are handcrafted in the Never Summer factory in Denver.

Always placing a strong emphasis on their local community, Bent Gate holds a Community Night once a month that features a movie or a professional speaker. During the summer, the focus is geared towards climbing and in the winter, the focus switches to skiing. Proceeds from summer Community Nights go to the Access Fund, a nonprofit organization to preserve climbing areas. Bent Gate donates proceeds from their winter events to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center or to Friends of Berthoud Pass.
The incoming winter weather means the camping, hiking, and climbing seasons will not last much longer, so give your friendly neighborhood Bent Gate a visit and make the most of it! This also means ski season is near. Bent Gate has their winter gear sale going on now through October 22. Not much of a climber, backpacker, or skier? The employees are great at helping newcomers get into the sports, so stop by and give give it a try.
