Here at Mines, the Club Sports Program is a huge part of many students’ life. Over 70% of Club Sports represent CSM at the highest level. The “average” club practices three times per week and competes on a regular basis. There are sports for fall, winter, and spring seasons. There are indoor and outdoor sports. There are team and individual sports. The sports offered through Club Sports include Bowling, Cycling, Ice Hockey, Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse, Men’s and Women’s Rugby, Skiing, Men’s and Women’s Soccer, Tennis, Men’s Ultimate, and Men’s and Women’s Volleyball. Clubs are student run, members are required to pay dues, clubs fundraise throughout the school year, compete with other schools throughout the year (not just their season), and hire coaches.
The official Intramural and Club Sports program at Mines was started in 2001 with many of the sports having been around since the 1980’s. Men’s Rugby is the oldest club sport at Mines, having been started in 1968. The Club Sports Program hosts over 40 games a year and has 400 student athletes. Intramurals consist of over 350 teams and 1,400 participants thus far. We have had 245 participants on the 73 grass volleyball teams and over 750 participants on 64 flag football teams. This year, we have added a new club sport to the program: Tennis. Tennis has been a part of Student Activities for the past few years and has made the decision to join the Club Sports Program this year.
Women’s Soccer has just begun their season. They have already played 3 games and have a record of 2-1. They beat Western State 7-4 and Mesa State 3-1. They have upcoming games on Saturday, September 17, at 9:15 AM in Boulder and Saturday, September 24, at 2:00 PM versus Colorado College on the IM North Field. Come out and support your CSM Women’s Club Soccer.
Club Ice Hockey had their first tryout on Thursday, September 15, and they had nearly 40 people show up. Ice Hockey has a new coach for the first time in a couple of years and they hope to begin building a strong team before their games begin on Friday September 30. This game is against Metro State at The Edge Ice Arena in Littleton. Ice Hockey’s next game will be on Saturday, October 1 (time and location TBD). Check out their website at http://recsports.mines.edu/REC-Club-Sports-Ice-Hockey-Calendar for a full schedule.
Both the Men’s and Women’s Volleyball teams have just began their seasons. Men’s Volleyball held tryouts this past week, with good turnouts both nights. Women’s Volleyball is hosting their tryouts Monday, September 19, and Thursday, September 22, from 6:45 to 10:00 PM in Lockridge Arena. They are looking forward to another amazing season with a new coach and hopefully a repeat of the National Championship they won in Houston, Texas, last year over CU at the NCVF National Tournament.
Women’s Rugby has also started their season. Practices are on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6-8 PM on the IM North field. They also have conditioning sessions at various locations on Thursdays at 5 PM. They have games on Saturdays and Sundays and have their next game on September 26 in Wyoming. Contact Kayla Smith at kaysmith@mines.edu for more information.
