Geek of the Week: Erin Keogh, Sophomore, Civil

When it comes right down to it, geeks are just people who are incredibly enthusiastic about the things they love. They are people who pursue their passions whole-heartedly, with reckless abandon, and refuse to care what other people may say about their choices. From her tendency to greet friends and strangers alike with an excited “HI!” to her willingness to join any fun-sounding, half-planned adventures, Erin shatters stereotypes about geeks being anti-social while obviously displaying the nerdy trademark of enthusiastic passion for life and all the little joys it brings.

[Oredigger]: So, you’re a Civil Engineering major. Why’d you choose that major? What do you like about it?
[Keogh]: I really like all the opportunities there are to do epic things. I [also] plan on minoring in Underground Construction and Tunnels, so perhaps I will dig a hole to China!

Do you have a life outside of classes, and if so, what do you do with it?
Yes. I’m an RA at Mines Park, so I spend all my time hanging out with my peeps. I’m on the first all-female Mine Rescue team, which is boss, and I love random late-night adventures and shenanigans.

Do you consider yourself a geek and why?
Of course I’m a geek! I’m a geek because I’m too excited about life, which includes school and other exciting things. I’ve also been brainwashed so that everything I think about is in terms of Physics or Calculus.

What are some of your greatest accomplishments?
Taking a shopping cart up the arduous cliffs of South Table Mountain in the dark.

If there was a sudden raptor attack on the school, would you survive and why?
Oh, I would definitely survive… because I would have a stegosaurus on my side to fight the raptors. And also, I would bake some cookies for the raptors to eat. But stegosauruses are the bomb-diggity!

What’s your favorite thing about Mines?
That’s a tough one because I love every single thing about Mines, but I’d have to say the people are awesome and I also enjoy the nerdy pride of the campus. It’s great. I can wear my nerdy glasses!

If you could be dropped into any TV show or movie, what would it be and why?
Zoolander! Definitely Zoolander because then I could learn how to read good at “The Derek Zoolander Center for Kids Who Can’t Read Good and Wanna Learn to do Other Stuff Good Too,” and discover whether there is “more to life than being really, really ridiculously good-looking.” Also, Hansel is my hero. He is so hot right now.

Do you have an evil plan to take over the world?
I’m not evil enough to have an evil plan, but I would definitely not mind having a bunch of minions to handle my non-evil desires.

Do you have any plans for life after Mines?
I plan on having a plan, but I can’t think that far ahead yet. I would like to have an epic job, but I would also like to adventure.

Any advice you’d like to give to fellow geeks and Mines students?
Get to know all of your fellow geeks and nerds because they are pretty freaking awesome. Also, enjoy the adventure of life!

What’s your favorite quote?
From Albert Einstein, “Out of clutter, find simplicity. From discord, find harmony. In the middle of difficulty, lies opportunity.” Also, from Buddy the Elf, “I just like to smile! Smiling’s my favorite.”
