Weekly sports recap: 11/7/11

November 1:
Men’s Soccer – Mines 2, UCCS 1 OT – Baski Baker scored his eighth goal of the season just over a minute into overtime as the Orediggers stayed alive in postseason play. Alex Gunberg also scored, netting his fourth of the year and goalkeeper Manville Strand made two saves in the win.

November 4:
Men’s Soccer – #3 Ft Lewis 3, Mines 1 – Philip Wilson scored on a rebound in the forty-eighth minute to give Mines a 1-0 lead, but after holding the #3 Lopers scoreless for 60 minutes, Ft. Lewis scored three unanswered goals to end the Orediggers season. Manville Strand and Ben Thomson each made one save in the loss.

Volleyball – Mines 3, CSC 0 – Holly Hutchison had 16 kills and Sam Johnson added 11 as Mines defeated Chadron State in straight sets. Amanda Massey had 43 assists and Sarah Pekarek led the Mines in digs with 19.

November 5:
Men XC – NCAA Regional Championships, 3rd – Sean Gildea (8th), Derek Alcorn (13th), Neal Anderson (14th), and Andrew Epperson (16th), and Curtis Taylor (21st) led the Orediggers to a third place finish overall as Mines looks to capture is seventh consecutive top ten finish at the Division II National Championships.

Women’s XC – NCAA Regional Championships, 7th – Chloe Gustafson recorded the Orediggers’ top finish, placing 22nd overall in 24:22. Hannah Schuster came in 30 seconds later in 41st place while Kirsten Farquhar finished 50th (25:16), Marie Patton placed 55th (25:24), and Jessica Baker came in 68th (25:48).

Football – #23 Mines 31, CSC 24 – Dan Palmer gained 128 all purpose yards and had a rushing touchdown in the win. Clay Garcia threw for 260 yards and a score and ran for a touchdown as well while Alex Vigil and Ryan Wood each had 10 tackles on defense during the victory on Senior Day.

Volleyball – #6 UNK 3, Mines 0 – After losing their only match of the season to Mines in September, UNK defeated CSM in three sets. Jackie Stabell and Sam Johnson each had 10 kills, Amanda Massey had 29 assists, and Sarah Pekarek led Mines in digs with 14 while Hannah Margheim had 11.

Women’s Soccer #9 Mines 2, #23 Fort Lewis PK – After playing to a 1-1 tie through overtime, Goalkeeper Penny Rogers made two critical saves in the penalty kick session and Dani Hering converted on her third career penalty kick to clinch the victory for the Orediggers. Kelsey Neal scored her fourth of the year as Mines advances to the RMAC Championship game.
