Intramural sports in action

With a semester already in the books, many Mines students are champing at the bit to capture an Intramural Sports title, and with that, the ever-elusive Intramural Champ Shirt. While offering traditional sports as 5-on-5 basketball and outdoor soccer, the intramural program likes to mix things up with tournament program offerings such as the wrestling tournament, arena football, kickball, and a track meet.

The wrestling tournament, which is this Monday, January 23rd at 7:00 p.m. in Volk Gymnasium, is one of the marquee spectator sports of the intramural sports program. An added bonus this year for all the participants is opportunity to win an actual championship belt which they can proudly display in addition to their Champ Shirt.

Another sport that many of the Mines’ students are looking forward to is arena football. Played in the SRC Rec Gym, this 5-on-5 fast paced game is sure to excite. Andy Maul, a senior chemical engineering major and quarterback of the intramural flag football men’s championship squad, The Backyarders, can’t wait. He said that he’s ready to defend his flag football title while ending his intramural career on a high note. Arena football begins in a little over two weeks, so be sure to sign up soon!
