Club Sport of the Week: Ice Hockey

The fastest sport on ice is making big waves in the Mines club sports community. With a record 35 members, the Men’s Ice Hockey team has greatly improved to be one of the juggernauts in the Division III ACHA. The team has been around for almost a decade at Mines and has seen a recent increase in participation, fan attendance, and wins! The team underwent a makeover last season and came out with new jerseys and two new coaches. Fundraising was a key part of this makeover, with a focus on selling tickets for the Avalanche game. The team has also put on a skate night at Apex Ice Arena for the school.

Although they don’t play on campus, their home games are located at the Edge Ice Arena (Kipling & C470) as well as the Apex Ice Arena (72nd and Ward Road in Arvada). These two both locations are short drives to see the hard-hitting fast paced action that has become Mines hockey. While the team does play close often, they do travel across the state of Colorado, as well as New Mexico and Wyoming.

The schedule can be found at the following website: http://recsports.mines.edu/REC-Club-Sports-Ice-Hockey-Calendar. The Mines Ice Hockey team has games the next 5 weekends on Friday and Saturday nights. This past Thursday, the team played at the Pepsi Center versus Colorado College in a scrimmage after the Avalanche game. They also played Friday and Saturday night in Gunnison, CO. This upcoming weekend they play in Colorado Springs against UCCS on Friday night and are back in Arvada to play UCCS at home.

With the meat of their season still ahead of them, the team is looking forward to great goaltending as well as a returning forward line which was responsible for most of the offensive production that the team experienced last season. The team is very excited about their numbers this season. With the 35 players, they can continue to have fresh legs throughout the games, which was a concern for them last season.

The team is not currently looking for new members, as they had tryouts at the beginning of the semester. If you are interested in joining the team, please email Eric DePinto at edepinto@mines.edu for information about next semester.
