While many students are gearing up for the CSM Spring Career Fair aiming to get their foot in industry’s door and gain an internship, why not consider applying for a research internship, or REU (research experience for undergraduates)? There are many REU programs across the country in just about any sort of research area, for those both exploring their interests or looking to research a particular topic. REUs are also a great resume booster for those thinking about graduate school in the future. Even those not planning to go into research or academia after getting their undergraduate have great experiences during the completion of their eight to ten week research project.
Though there is much wisdom to be gained from listening to the experiences and pitfalls of upperclassmen, it behooves all Mines students to sometimes hear from the younger, up-and-coming geeks. Freshman Josie Kinzie, a Geophysics major, is one among the newer ranks of Mines students, but with her enthusiasm and love of all things nerdy, she truly earns her place within the elite ranks of the geeks of Mines.
“Pause Ahead” is a free online action-platformer game from developer Askiisoft that employs a very unique mechanic in its gameplay: the pause button. Hitting the pause button in this game causes all the on-screen action to freeze, but the player character retains his momentum. The player is given no special powers outside of this one, which opens the door to a lot of complex and trying puzzles.
“Devil Dinosaur” is a comic from the last 1970s about a super-strong, relatively intelligent T-Rex and his humanoid companion, Moon-Boy, running wild across a prehistoric landscape and having all kinds of crazy adventures. The series takes place in a parallel universe where dinosaurs and an early form of humanity lived during the same period of time. It is the creation of the King of Comics, Jack Kirby, who was heavily involved with much of the comics industry from the 1930s onward, but is usually best known for creating or co-creating some of the legends of Marvel Comics, including the Fantastic Four, Thor, the Hulk, Iron Man, the X-Men, Magneto, Doctor Doom, Galactus, the Silver Surfer, Uatu the Watcher, and many others. Devil Dinosaur was an attempt by Marvel to create a comic series that could be turned into an animated show to rival DC’s attempts at producing their own animated show based on “Kamandi,” a series Kirby had previously created for DC.
“Mort” is the fourth book in the Discworld series by Sir Terry Pratchett and the first book of the Death series of stories within the Discworld. “Mort” stands out as the point where the Discworld series goes from an occasionally funny if bland send-up of the fantasy genre to a legitimately good piece of fiction with depth that is capable of delivery both laughs as well as heart-wrenching moments of true emotional attachment to its characters.
The Colorado School of Mines wrestling team squared off against New Mexico Highlands on Friday in their home opener and lost 34-12. Mines gained three victories in the contest from Jacob Gerken (forfeit), Paul Wilson and Luis Gurule (decision). It was Gurule’s tenth victory of the season giving him a record of 10-2 on the season and Wilson’s ninth victory (9-3).
The Colorado School of Mines women’s basketball team squared off against UCCS on Friday and ended their four game losing streak in exciting fashion. Thanks to a three-point play by senior Allie Grazulis in the waning seconds, Mines pulled off the 55-54 road victory. Mines never trailed by more than two points in the game, and their largest lead was nine points, less than five minutes into the second half (33-24).
After putting a halt to a four game skid in exciting fashion on Friday night at UCCS, the CSM women’s basketball squad traveled up to CSU-Pueblo on Saturday evening in search of their second consecutive victory. Behind a solid night from beyond the three point arc, the Lady Orediggers were able to upend the RMAC’s number two team on the road, 55-47.
CSM’s track and field team kicked off the 2014 portion of their schedule in Boulder this weekend at the Potts Indoor Invitational. The two-day event saw Mines athletes fiercely compete with opponents from CU, Metro State, UCCS, and Denver, and come away with some strong finishes and even a few wins including two provisionals.
