The CSM Baseball team finally got to play a series on their own grass the weekend of March 8. Mines went against the Colorado Christian University Cougars for the four game set, winning the first two games 14-4 and 11-2, and losing Sunday’s matches 4-1 and 11-1.
Mines baseball traveled to Grand Junction on the Western Slope to play Colorado Mesa University in a four game series. The series did not start well for the Orediggers, as they dropped the first three games 11-1, 11-7 and 3-2.
Spring Break comes at the perfect point in the semester to rescue Mines students from the constant homework, exams and projects. It is also a good halfway marker for the semester. Mines jokingly put up on the student activities board, “Don’t get arrested” the week before Spring Break. Hopefully most student’s plans included not being arrested, having fun, and maybe some relaxing. Before students headed off to faraway lands or home a few minutes away, Minds at Mines caught up with a few to ask,”What will have your Spring Break consisted of?”
Everyone has that one movie they watched over and over again as kids, and sometimes the viewing ended in rewinding, for DVDs had not become wide-spread yet in the 90’s. This week, Minds at Mines asked, “What was your favorite movie from your childhood?”
From biofuels to mineral exploration, the Conference on Earth and Energy Research (CEER) brought together great minds and scientists, current and future, at Mines. The Graduation Student Association of CSM did a great job of displaying great research while empowering energy and earth scientists after hearing the keynote lectures.
When Professors Rebecca Swanson and Deb Carney set foot on campus in 2012, they felt something was missing. “They already had this idea of coming together and making the women community stronger,” said Kownoon Her, a SWiM officer. A group for women in math was something Carney and Swanson had previously experienced and enjoyed, but there was no such group at Mines—yet. Society for Women in Mathematics at Mines was born last Spring, but truly launched in the Fall with hearty support from the Department of Applied Math and Statistics. Though Carney, Swanson, and Agata Dean were instrumental in the initiation and vision of the club, SWiM thrives from both AMS faculty and student leadership and participation, creating a vertically integrated community. Before SWiM, SWE was the only organization on the Mines campus that was specifically for women, but growing efforts by Mines to recruit more women resulted in strong support for SWiM by the campus, including WISEM (Women in Science, Engineering, and Math). SWiM is now an official student chapter of AWM, Association for Women in Mathematics.
Some geeks are obsessed and fascinated by their studies, and some have watched Star Wars countless times. Anna Bond is both. In her third year at Mines, she seems to have found true geophysical happiness as classes have grown more interesting for her, fulfilling some curiosity that has been in her heart from a young age. Between leadership meetings for the Alpha Phi sorority and deriving the telegrapher’s equation for a magnetic field, The Oredigger caught up with Anna to talk about her geekiness that may not be well-known.
The Lady Orediggers continued their February by winning all four games versus Southwest Minnesota at home and traveling to Sterling to engage in the first conference games of the season against Chadron State and UCCS. Mines won the SMSU games 8-6, 14-5, 9-5, and 12-7, and kicked off last weekend by beating Chadron 11-3 in six innings but losing to UCCS 6-5.
Baseball’s two-week trip to Texas started out in Odessa, where the Orediggers took on Tarleton State and UT-Permian Basin for three games. Mines won the first two games 3-1 and 5-1 and lost Sunday’s game 6-2.
Discover Mines happened last week, with prospective accepted students and their families scurrying about campus, trying to decide if they want to spend the next four (or five or more) years of their life in Golden. To students at Mines, that decision-making time may seem like a long time ago, yet the reasons they decided to choose Mines can still be remembered. This week, Minds at Mines tried to get an idea of what made undergraduate students choose to come here by asking, “What was the deciding factor in deciding you wanted to come to Mines?”
