All eyes were on the CSM soccer complex Friday night as the 20th-ranked Oredigger men’s team hosted second-ranked Fort Lewis College in a crucial Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference match between bitter rivals. The game was hotly contested, played with the fury and determination one would expect from a conference rivalry. A rowdy crowd was on hand, including a large contingent from Durango supporting the visiting Skyhawks. Unfortunately, the visitors pulled away late for a 4-1 victory over the Orediggers.
For a second, it looked as if it was going to happen again. The team that had handed the #3 CSM men’s soccer team its only loss of the season, Regis University, jumped out to an early 1-0 lead and with momentum on their side, looked to pull off a second upset win over Mines in the opening round of the Division II NCAA tournament in Golden, CO.
The Colorado School of Mines (CSM) men’s soccer team resoundingly defeated the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs (UCCS) Mountain Lions 4-0 October 15.

It has become the norm of late for the Mines athletic program to witness success. Across the board most of the Oredigger athletics have become national forces in their sports. But that was not good enough for the men’s soccer team. They have exploded with solid play so far, soaring to an 8-0-1 record. This start, including two wins over formerly-ranked #1 Fort Lewis, has vaulted the Orediggers into history as they became the first team in CSM history to be ranked #1 in the nation.
The women’s soccer game overcame two tough, early losses to earn their first win of the season Friday as the Colorado School of Mines beat Texas Woman’s University 2-0.Most of the game was dominated by strong defensive performances on both sides. It was not until late in the first half in the forty-first minute that CSM junior Joanna Graves broke the scoreless tie. Teammate Megan Woodworth fired a well-placed corner kick into the box, where Graves caught the ball in midair with her foot and sent it home. It was Graves’s first goal of the 2010 season.
