Ten police officers were killed in a suicide bombing in northern Afghanistan on Saturday when a man driving a motorbike detonated a bomb at a busy roundabout in Kunduz. Four civilians and five other policemen were also wounded. The attack came a day after another suicide bomber killed five civilians and wounded 15 others when he attacked a NATO convoy in Kapisa, Afghanistan.
A New Jersey high school teacher was arrested last week for having a sexual relationship with a student. The 28 year old algebra teacher was charged with second-degree sexual assault and fourth-degree child abuse. According to prosecutors she began the relationship with the 16 year old boy in December and she allegedly had at least three sexual encounters in a classroom inside the school. The teacher realized that officials had discovered her relationship, which prompted her to check into a rehabilitation center in Florida.
Anonymous says it infiltrated the website of US Sentencing Commission to avenge the death of Aaron Swartz. The website was taken over and was replaced with a message warning that when Swartz killed himself two weeks ago “a line was crossed.” Family and friends say that Swartz committed suicide after being hounded by federal prosecutors for helping post millions of court documents online and for illegally downloading millions of academic articles from an online clearinghouse.
An Egyptian court sentenced 21 people to death for their involvement in the Port Said soccer stadium disaster in which 74 people died last year. The ruling could reduce clashes on Egypt’s turbulent streets as soccer fans and families of those killed had threatened more violence if the punishments did not satisfy them. The ruling came after nine deaths during protests this week. The protests were held to mark the two years since Egypt’s revolution forced Hosni Mubarak from power and to accuse Mohamed Mursi for re-imposing authoritarian rule. In all, 73 people were charged with involvement in the disaster at the end of a match between Cairo’s Al Ahly and al-Masry. Spectators were crushed when panicked crowds tried to escape from the stadium after a post-match invasion by supporters of al-Masry. Others fell or were even thrown from terraces.
A jail riot in Venezuela killed dozens of people last Friday. Violence broke out after inmates heard about an inspection to confiscate weapons at the Centro Occidental jail. Reports indicate that between 26 and 54 people were killed in what is the latest incident in the ongoing crisis of Venezuela’s crowded prisons. The violence involved a struggle between rival gangs for control of the jail and a confrontation between inmates and troops called in to calm the situation. Venezuelan prisons are largely controlled by armed gangs that have rioted repeatedly over the last several years.
North Korea has threatened repeatedly to attack rival South Korea since the Korean War. Last Friday North Korea said that if South Korea joined a new round of tightened U.N. sanctions that it would regard this as “a declaration of war.” The North is boycotting all dialogue aimed at ending its nuclear program and vowed to conduct more rocket and nuclear tests after the U.N. censured it for a December long-range missile test.
