The No. 13 Colorado School of Mines volleyball team finished their regular season with a road game at Colorado Christian and a home game against UCCS. In their first match after claiming the regular season RMAC title, the Lady Orediggers could not keep their 15 match winning streak going against Colorado Christian (18-10, 16-6 RMAC), losing 3-0. The result was different on senior night as the Orediggers dispatched the pesky UCCS Mountain Lions 3-1.
The first set against Colorado Christian saw Mines fall down early 4-10, and they never were able to climb out of that early hole as they fell 21-25. The second set was a back and forth affair. The largest lead by any team was three points by Mines at 12-9, and both teams traded the lead numerous times with CCU finally pulling out the 26-24 victory. The third and final set of the night was another close match, but the visitors once again fell short 23-25.
On that night, freshman No. 2 Alanna Winfield led the team with 13 kills, three digs, and two blocks. Senior Melanie Wannamaker (No.11) had 12 kills, two digs, and five blocks, and junior Sarah Pekarek (No. 3) added 12 kills, three digs, and two blocks. The Orediggers were led defensively by senior Hannah Margheim (No. 15) with 22 digs, and sophomore Danielle Johnson-Hazlewood (No. 8) led the team with 43 assists.
Friday night’s regular season ending game went a little more smoothly for the Lady Orediggers when they won with a score of three sets to one, defeating the visiting University of Colorado-Colorado Springs Mountain Lions (11-15, 7-11 RMAC).
Mines came out firing on all cylinders in the first set and jumped out to an early 9-4 lead. UCCS fought hard, as they would all night, and got within two points at 16-18, but the Lady Orediggers pulled away again thanks to some timely Wannamaker kills to capture the first set 25-19.
The second set saw the Orediggers fall behind 18-12 before mounting a fierce comeback to take the set 25-23. The third set started out close, and both teams traded points for much of the set. UCCS had the largest lead of the set at 23-19, but this time CSM could not fight back as the Mountain Lions won the set 25-21.
The fourth set started out great for Mines as they took the first three points, but UCCS would fight back and take the lead at 13-12. However, with some timely kills and solid defense, Mines pulled out the match clinching 20-25 victory.
Wannamaker led the Orediggers with 21 kills on a .436 hitting percentage, and added three digs and three blocks. Pekarek had a double-double with 15 kills and 11 digs, while Winfield added 17 kills (.378 hitting percentage) and two blocks. Johnson-Hazlewood had 63 assists and 19 digs and Margheim had 19 digs and four assists. Freshman Abby Reuland (No. 5) added six kills and six digs, while sophomore (No. 16) Corrine Din tallied 17 digs. As a team Mines had a hitting percentage of .267, and had a total of 93 digs and 69 assists. Next up for the Lady Orediggers is the RMAC tournament which starts Tuesday. Mines will play Fort Lewis at home at 7PM.
