The Colorado School of Mines men’s soccer team took on No. 3 Regis University looking to slow down the high-powered Ranger offense that leads all of Division II in scoring. Mines did just that, holding a Regis team that is avergaing nearly four goals per game to just one score on the night. But it was not enough as Regis held on for the 1-0 win in dreary weather Friday at the CSM Soccer Stadium.
The first half was a physical affair, but after 45 minutes of play, decent looks by both teams, and even better saves by both goalkeepers, the score was 0-0.
After Seun Ogunmodede’s shot in the 48th minute was blocked to open the second half action, the Rangers’ Ryan Urwiller quickly responded with a goal in the 50th minute to score the lone goal of the game and give Regis the 1-0 advantage. The Orediggers fought hard in the remaining 40 minutes, but simply could not record the tying score. The final chance for Mines came in the final minute when they were awarded a corner kick, but nothing came of it and the Orediggers lost a well played and hotly contested game 1-0. This was the second 1-0 defeat the Orediggers have experienced in their last three games.
Ogunmodede tallied three of the Oredigggers’ 10 shots in the game, and Manville Strand made 4 saves on the night. There were a total of 35 fouls in the contest, 21 for Regis and 14 for Mines. The loss drops the Orediggers to 3-2-2 in the RMAC and 6-3-2 overall. Mines travels to Colorado Mesa October 12 for a short, one game road trip before returning to Golden to host Adams State on October 14.
