Over E-days weekend (Apr. 1-2), a group of students represented Mines at the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Regional Competition at CU Denver. At the competition, students designed and constructed a steel bridge and paddled a concrete canoe. Overall, the students performed magnificently. The Steel Bridge Team, Blue Steel, came in second place and will continue on to the National Student Steel Bridge Competition in Utah in late May.
Over the past four years, this will be the second Mines team to go to nationals, and I believe the success has come from the positive energy and great teamwork these students have.
“The Mines Steel Bridge Team is honored to have the opportunity to represent our university at the national level,” senior Ryan Lanham, a team member, said. “It serves as a way to show other universities across the nation what going to Mines means.”
The main difference from last year’s competition is that the entire design involved male/female connections, so that they slide together quickly during the construction portion of the competition. This team also has a fantastic dynamic, and represents a true image of everyone’s favorite phrase – “teamwork makes the dream work”.
