CSM track and field defeats at meet

The CSM track & field team hosted its first meet at the Stermole Track & Field Complex on Friday afternoon. CSM competed in a dual meet against UC-Colorado Springs as the men defeated UCCS, 92-26, while the women defeated UCCS, 74-19.

The Oredigger women had two athletes with provisional qualifying marks. Kiera Benson recorded her first provisional qualifying mark in the long jump of 5.71 m (18’-9”) which ranks her in the top 20 on the pision II performance list. Savannah Afoa improved on her mark in the discus moving up to 15th on the pision II performance list with a distance of 44.91 m (147’-44”). Mines scored first-place points in 8 of the 12 women’s events.

 

Much like the women, the Mines men had a first time provisional mark and an improvement on a previous provisional mark on Friday afternoon. Russell Drummond went from 17th on the pision II performance list to fifth was a time of 3:48.51 in the 1500 m. Nick Zehring had the best marks of the day in the shot put, discus and hammer throw. Zehring had a provisional mark of 55.11 m (180’-10”) in the hammer and now has provisional marks this season in both the shot put and hammer throw. CSM scored first-place points in 11 of the 14 men’s events.

The CSM track & field squad will compete at the RMAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Pueblo, Colo. on Sunday-Tuesday, May 9-11. Mines will host the CSM Last Chance Meet on Sunday, May 16th. Those athletes that qualify will compete at the 2010 NCAA pision II Outdoor Track & Field Championships on May 27th-29th in Cary, N.C. hosted by JC Smith University.
