Emma Stone Goes All the Way in “Easy A”

Emma Stone shines in “Easy A” as Olive Penderghast, a high school girl with absolutely no reputation until a little white lie about losing her virginity gets out. When Olive’s pushy friend pries for details about what happened over the weekend, Olive appeases her by making up an elaborate story about losing her virginity to a college boy from a nearby school. In reality, Olive spent the weekend at home singing and dancing to Natasha Bedingfield’s hit-single “Pocketful of Sunshine.” Unfortunately for Olive, her fake story is overheard by the catty Marianne, and the rumor spreads like wildfire.

At first, Olive tries setting her story straight when she finds her life paralleling Hester Prynne’s in The Scarlet Letter, a book she is coincidentally studying in school. After she is branded a ‘slut’ by everyone in school, Olive changes gears and embraces her newly-made reputation instead. She adopts the policy of “Let’s not and say we did,” and for a fee, allows boys who need a reputation boost to lie about hooking up with her. She even decides to look the part by wearing scandalous corsets and 5-inch heels to school. Where Hester Prynne was forced to wear the scarlet letter “A,” Olive chooses to wear one.

At 1 hour and 32 minutes, “Easy A” is a unique and unpredictable comedy. Released September 17, 2010, the movie is still out in theaters. Emma Stone plays her part wonderfully alongside some familiar faces including Amanda Bynes, Lisa Kudrow, Penn Badgley, Alyson Michalka, Stanley Tucci, and Cam Gigandet. Although the movie is not IMAX 3D-worthy, “Easy A” is a great movie to go out and see.
