Melodic Miners Take the Library Stage

On Feb. 26, the Melodic Miners performed at the Arthur Lakes Library as part of the lunchtime concert series.  Featuring nine women from freshmen to seniors, the all-female a cappella group sang various songs in four-part harmony without any accompaniment.  The group has been a vibrant part of Mines since 1998.

The Melodic Miners performs in the style of the 1950’s Sweet Adeline a cappella barbershop, incorporating harmonies into classic songs like “Mr. Sandman” and “Lollipop” made famous by the Chordettes.

“Auditions to join the group occur each fall, and each year the group gains new members and a new sound,” said one of the members.

In order to best fit their talents and their ever-changing sound, the group chose to perform many entertaining and recognizable songs, including “Dream a Little Dream of Me,” “Cups” from the film “Pitch Perfect,” and a particularly complex mash-up of “Wide Awake” and “As Long As You Love Me.”

For those interested in learning more about a cappella, the Melodic Miners will be performing in a final concert on Apr. 29, along with other choir groups on campus.  They also sing carols each Christmas season at the Denver Zoo and Botanic Gardens, and most recently provided the popular Singing Valentines this past February.

If you missed this performance at the library, there are many more to come.

“On Mar. 11, the Armando Lopez Quartet will be performing modern jazz and R&B soul,” said Wendy Shortridge, the coordinator for concerts in the library.

The library will continue featuring music entertainment Friday afternoons from 12-1 pm as per their schedule on the library website, which can be found here: http://library.mines.edu/LIB-About-Events.

If you are looking for a way to spend your lunch hour or if you need a quick study break, come listen to the talented performers.  Cool drinks and refreshing music are provided.
