Weekly Sports Recap: 9/26/11

Sept 11:
Men’s Soccer – #13 CSM 3, UCCS 2 – Seun Ogunmodede scored his first goal of the season, a game-winner in the 85th minute as Mines outlasted the Mountain Lions 3-2. Baski Baker scored his third goal of the seaon in the 14th minute, Zach Page-Belknap added another in the 62nd and Manville Strand made three saves in the win.

Women’s Soccer – #20 CSM 4, UCCS 0 – Erin Onat scored twice and Megan Woodworth and Becah Morales each added a goal as CSM dominated the Mountain Lions from the start.

Sept 18:
Men’s Soccer – #11 CSM 6, CCU 0 – Tesho Akindele recorded his fourth career hattrick, and Zach Page-Belknap, Alex Nass and Seun Ogunmodede each added a goal as Mines overwhelmed Colorado Christian. Manville Strand and Ben Thompson combined for four saves in the shutout.
Women’s Soccer – #10 CSM 5, CCU 0 – Erin Onat, Kelsey Neal, Anna Evans, Kat Murphy and Maddie Woodard each scored and Amy Hegarty recorded a shutout in her first career start as Mines blew out CCU.

Sept 23:
Volleyball – CSM 3, #4 UNK 1 – Jackie Stabell recorded a match high 18 kills, Hannah Margheim added 24 digs and Amanda Massey had 48 assists as CSM shocked the fourth ranked Lopers. The win was only the second in program history for the Orediggers over UNK. In the 37 games previously played, UNK had won 36.

Men’s Soccer – #11 CSM 2, Regis 0 – Baski Baker scored in the 14th minuted and Philip Wilson added one more in the 51st and Manville Strand made five saves to propel the Orediggers to the shutout win over the 16th ranked Rangers.
Women’s Soccer – #6 Metro State 1, #10 CSM 0 2OT – Mines mustered seven shots, but could not find the back of the net as they fell to #6 Metro State in double overtime. Goalkeeper Amy Hegarty made three saves in the loss.

Sept 24:
Volleyball – CSM 3, Chadron State 0 – Jackie Stabelll led CSM with 11 kills, while Sam Johnson and Holly Hutchison each had 10. Amanda Massey had 40 assists and Hannah Margheim added 16 digs, only five short of Chadron’s entire team total, as Mines cruised past the Eagles.

Men’s Cross Country – #4 CSM, 1st – Sean Gildea finished 1st overall out of 248 runners, Andrew Emerson placed 3rd, Russell Drummond 5th, Mack McClain 10th, Paul Geimer 13th, and Derek Alcorn 15th as Mines blew past the competition winning by 58 points at the Erik Anderson Invitational in Spokane, WA.

Women’s Cross Country – CSM, 6th – Marie Patton led Mines with a 19th place finish overall, Chloe Gustafson finished 22nd and Hannah Schuster finished in 24th. Mines’ sixth place finish was the best by an RMAC team.

Football – CSM 27, WNM 21 OT – Clay Garcia snuck into the endzone on third down and goal in overtime, and the defense kept Western New Mexico at bay as Mines defeated the Mustangs. Dan Palmer rushed for 142 yards, Garcia added 151 through the air and Mark Powell and Alex Vigil combined for a key sack in overtime in the win.
