Orediggers Shine at Conference Championships

In what would be the final tuneup before the conference championships, the Colorado School of Mines Track team finished off the regular season in style. With eight provisionals, Mines made the most of their home meet, the Joe Davies Open.
This past weekend, the Colorado School of Mines men and women’s track teams competed at two different meets and came home with some quality finishes and a few provisionals.
The Colorado School of Mines men’s and women’s track teams headed to the Air Force Academy for two days of events Friday and Saturday, and came away with some impressive showings finishing second out of four Division II schools.
Led by senior Ryan Ewen on Friday, the Oredigger men captured the top four places in Division II. Ewen finished eleventh overall with a throw of 16.73 meters, junior Austin Roup came in fourteenth (15.09m), senior Nico Redfern was fifteenth (15.07m), and sophomore Jacob Hollister came in sixteenth (14.5m). For the women, senior Cassie Ratzlaff finished thirteenth with a throw of 15.11m.
CSM’s track and field team kicked off the 2014 portion of their schedule in Boulder this weekend at the Potts Indoor Invitational. The two-day event saw Mines athletes fiercely compete with opponents from CU, Metro State, UCCS, and Denver, and come away with some strong finishes and even a few wins including two provisionals.
The Colorado School of Mines men’s cross country team traveled to Spokane, Washington this past weekend and left with a top-five finish and three repeat All-Americans. This was the fifth top-five finish in as many years for the men’s cross country team after their second place showing last year. RMAC rivals Adams State and Western State finished first and fourth respectively, with Grand Valley State taking second, and Augustana third.
The Colorado School of Mines men’s and women’s cross country teams headed down to Canyon, Texas for the South Central Regional Championships and turned in spectacular results. The fifth ranked men’s team finished third out of 21 teams, losing only to No. 2 Adams State, and No. 1 Western State. The women’s team finished seventh out of 22 teams. Junior Derek Alcorn and Senior Andrew Epperson finished fifth and sixth overall respectively with times of 30:24 and 30:26 at the 10k distance.
The Colorado School of Mines women’s cross country team took to the track on Saturday at the Roadrunner Invite, hosted by Metro State. The Lady Orediggers took fourth against six teams including RMAC foes Metro State, UCCS, Regis, and Colorado Christian.
Last weekend, the Colorado School of Mines cross country teams used their three weeks of training since their last meet to run past the competition. With races in both Boulder, Colorado and Palo Alto, California, the weekend proved successful for both the men’s and women’s teams. The women’s team finished sixth out of eleven teams at the Stanford Invitational. The No. 6 ranked men’s team finished first out of sixteen non-Division I one teams at the Stanford invitational and second out of seven non-DI teams at the Rocky Mountain Shootout in Boulder, Colorado.
The Colorado School of Mines men’s and women’s cross country teams opened their season on Friday at Colorado State University. The men’s team finished fifth overall out of seven teams and second out of the division two schools, losing to RMAC rival Western State. The women finished third out of the three D II teams. Chloe Gustafson finished in a career best fourth place out of 77 women and Phil Schneider came in tenth overall out of 115 runners.
