Lee Daniels’ “The Butler” is a 2013 historical film directed by Lee Daniels and starring Forest Whitaker, Oprah Winfrey, and John Cusack. The Butler is a fictionalized version of the life of Eugene Allen (Cecil Gaines in this film) who acted as head butler for the White House between 1952 and 1986. The film paints the story of Cecil and his family within the backdrop of the changes to the political and racial landscape between this time period.

Career Day Prep for graduate students

Because Career Day is centered more around internships and full time hiring of undergraduates, it is highly recommended by the Career Center that graduate students looking for internships and full time positions make a larger effort by researching companies with potential openings and networking with them. These two things can reduce the frustration that can be introduced in the job search as a graduate student.

Music Review: Tallahassee

“Tallahassee” was released in 2002 by the indie lo-fi folk rock band The Mountain Goats and is the first album released by the group to be done as a more or less full band. The entirety of “Tallahassee” is the continuation of the story of two characters which frequently recur in The Mountain Goats song known as the Alpha Couple, as many of the songs that are about them feature the word Alpha in the title. The Alpha Couple by this point in their lives have moved together to Tallahassee in an effort to prevent the complete failure of their marriage which slowly falls together as they begin to drink themselves to death instead of leaving each other while their few remaining friends abandon the hopeless alcoholics to their lives of mutual destruction

Movie Review: Wolves of Wall Street

Wolves of Wall Street is the 2002 film by director David DeCoteau starring Jeff Branson, Louise Lasser, and William Gregory Lee. This is the story of Jeff Allen (Lee) who becomes a part of one of the most cutthroat brokerage firms in Manhattan and slowly learns the dark secret behind their immense success. This film should not be confused with the 2013 film, The Wolf of Wall Street, as one of these films is about a series of financial predators who animalistically devour the weak and less ferocious individuals of Wall Street, while the film in this review is about werewolves.

Geologic research making waves

“I really think rare earth elements are fascinating and represent the unknown of the useful periodic table and rare earth elements will become much more important in the future” says John Bristow, a graduate student working on rare earth mineral research for the geological engineering and geology department. Bristow is currently doing independent research on the absorption of rare earth minerals by all the varieties of clays in hopes of seeing whether certain kinds of clay collect the minerals at a greater or slower rate. His research is notable because of the rarity of independent research at the Colorado School of Mines as well as the fact that his work is experimental in nature, as most research in geology here at Mines is done in economic ore bodies, hydrology, or geological engineering.

Scientific discoveries this week: 1/27/14

Pro-EU integration protests escalated into open conflict between protesters and riot police in Kiev as it did early in last December following the passing of laws to punish and discourage protesting in response to the movement in Ukraine. Riot police, while not authorized to use live ammunition, have been photographed using molotov cocktails and improvised fragmentation grenades to disperse protesters. While dialogue has opened between government officials and opposition leaders, there is skepticism whether anything useful will come from the talks.

Music Review: By the Light of the Northern Star

Music is often thought of as an attempt to capture transcendental emotion into vibrations of air so that we may all again experience the sensations of somber peace with the world, the warmth of our first loves in the summer sun, or the cold distant pain of loss. Instead of those particular emotions, “By the Light of the Northern Star” by Týr is exaltation and passion coming from Viking lore and Norse mythology. Týr is a viking metal band from the Faroe Islands. For those not familiar with the countless subgenres of metal, the band plays songs that blend the black metal and folk metal by combining loud songs, relatively slow paces, and lyrical themes coming from viking lore and Norse mythology. Every song on this album is majestic and powerful yet accessible to those new to the genre even with two of the songs beings song in Faroese.

Book Review: Mort

“Mort” is the fourth book in the Discworld series by Sir Terry Pratchett and the first book of the Death series of stories within the Discworld. “Mort” stands out as the point where the Discworld series goes from an occasionally funny if bland send-up of the fantasy genre to a legitimately good piece of fiction with depth that is capable of delivery both laughs as well as heart-wrenching moments of true emotional attachment to its characters.

Game Review: Dungeons of Dredmor

In the midst of a gaming world full of multiplayer focused, first-person shooters, foul mouthed twelve year olds, open world role playing games where finding a quest can take hours, and games relying on gimmicks like motion capturing and touch screens instead of gameplay, it can be refreshing to go back to basics. Dungeons of Dredmor is exactly that. The game is a fairly straightforward, Roguelike, dungeon crawling role playing game made up of randomized levels with a single semi-customized character and a very uncomplicated quest in mind. This game heavily invokes Nethack by being an incredibly fun, if on occasion frustratingly difficult game that can be played over and over again because of the randomization of the dungeon and the broad range of ways to actually trudge through the game’s ten to fifteen levels.

Headlines from around the world: 9/23/13

On Monday, a lone gunman, Navy contractor Aaron Alexis, fatally wounded twelve people and injured three others before being killed by police at the Washington Navy Yard. According to FBI Director James Comey, the shooter moved without any “discernable pattern” and that “It appears to [Comey] that he was wandering the halls and hunting people to shoot”. The ongoing investigation has yet to determine a motive.
