CSM runs away from NMHU 49-21

The Colorado School of Mines overcame a slow first quarter of mistakes to take care of the New Mexico Highlands University Cowboys 49-21 Saturday afternoon at Perkins Stadium in Las Vegas, NM.

The win sends the Orediggers to 2-1 overall, 1-0 RMAC as the offensive explosion continued for Quarterback Clay Garcia and company.

Athlete of the Week: Manville Strand, Sophomore, Soccer

Two years ago, the name Manville Strand was not heard among the Mines Men’s Soccer team. No one recruited him, no one gave him a scholarship, and he was not even on the team. But, after joining the team as a freshman walk-on, this Oredigger goalkeeper quickly rose from anonymity to become the RMAC 2009 Freshman of the year. Now, in his second year as an Oredigger, Strand has not lost a beat, allowing only one goal in four games and racking up 7 saves. He has played over 340 minutes and garnered a 0.26 goals against average and a 0.875 save percentage. Earlier this month, Strand was named the RMAC defensive player of the week.  The civil engineering major is now helping to lead a dangerous Mines team that is ranked third in the nation and has already defeated #1 Fort Lewis 1-0. For his effort and performances so far, Manville Strand is this week’s Oredigger Athlete of the Week.

Lady Orediggers demolish TWU 2-0

The women’s soccer game overcame two tough, early losses to earn their first win of the season Friday as the Colorado School of Mines beat Texas Woman’s University 2-0.Most of the game was dominated by strong defensive performances on both sides. It was not until late in the first half in the forty-first minute that CSM junior Joanna Graves broke the scoreless tie. Teammate Megan Woodworth fired a well-placed corner kick into the box, where Graves caught the ball in midair with her foot and sent it home. It was Graves’s first goal of the 2010 season.

Athlete of the Week: Clay Garcia, Junior, Football

The last four years of Oredigger football have been dominated in part by standout quarterback David Pesek. Now Pesek has graduated and junior Clay Garcia finally has his chance to impress. And impress he has. He has taken no time in leading an explosive Mines offense with 666 yards in only his first two games. The Mechanical Engineer will earn his undergraduate degree in the spring and looks to return to complete his Master’s degree. His recent effort in a 52-24 win over South Dakota Mines (27-42 for 417 yds and 6 TD) was enough to earn him the honor of RMAC Offensive Player of the Week and, of course, the Oredigger Athlete of the Week.

NFL 2010 season preview

It is once again football season in America, and starting Sunday my attention will diverted from Circuits, Statics, and whatever homework I forgot to do. And while last season’s Super Bowl match up between Indianapolis and New Orleans was predicted at the beginning of the season, the 2010-2011 is filled with question marks. Below are previews for some of the prominent contenders for the Lombardi trophy this season, in addition to my beloved Broncos, who will undoubtedly make me cry this year.

CSM rolls SDSMT

Saturday’s game pitted the Orediggers against South Dakota School of Mines & Technology’s Hardrockers. After 474 yards of offensive play, Mines reversed their loss a week before with a 52-24 victory. Junior Clay Garcia led the CSM offense, gaining 415 yards and completing 24 out of 42 attempted passes.

CSM pulls out upset

The Colorado School of Mines men’s soccer team got a little piece of revenge Friday night, as they stunned the soccer community in pulling out the upset over the #1 Fort Lewis Skyhawks 1-0.

Fort Lewis, the reigning D-II men’s soccer national champions, ended the Orediggers season last year in the opening round of the tournament by a score of 3-0. Friday’s home game was a different story as the Colorado School of Mines controlled play for most of the first half, firing 5 shots and putting pressure on the Skyhawks defense.
