Technical interview tips for success

“We first make our habits, then our habits make us.” This quote by John Dryden embodies the idea that Art Livotte of Agilent Technologies shared with all that attended his lecture Wednesday titled “3-Ways to Fail your Technical Interview, plus 7-ways to Ace It.” Livotte argues that if we develop proper habits and implement them in our lives, it will lead us to success and help us to avoid the three major pitfalls he sees as a recruiter.

Scientific discoveries this week: 2/6/12

Yunnan Province, China – Petroleum companies map geological formations underwater using high-pressure blasts from air guns. The technology is being applied to the field of seismology to measure how seismic waves propagate through the rock. The researchers have postulated that they will be able to monitor the internal stress changes within the rock near fault zones. By tracking this stress, they may be able to predict earthquakes with some accuracy. Researchers plan to test the technology by firing the gun once a week for the next few years in a known seismically active zone and noting the changes that occur.

Great interview tips

“We made a 25 kV Tesla Coil and blew up all the electronics in a two block radius.” said Jill Patterson, the Human Resources Manager at The RMH Group, a local consulting firm. She was explaining some advice an engineer wanted her to give students applying for jobs. The advice in full was to “convey an interest in and a passion for life and engineering including examples of interesting or weird experiments.”

Future of Librarianship

“The easiest way for me to be proven wrong is to tell you what I think the future of librarianship will be,” said Carl Grant, a library management consultant. The profession of librarianship is on the decline and, according to the report “Perceptions of Libraries,” at the projected rate, libraries will not be used at all by the year 2035.

Winter X-Games rock Aspen

The 2012 Winter X-Games was a historic event, as highlights included the first ever snowmobile frontflip, a record breaking 96 point run in the ski slopestyle, and a weekend of paying respect to the late Sarah Burke. But despite all this, the X-Games still belonged to snowboarder Shaun White.

Athlete of the Week: Matt Bisping, Junior, Swimming

Few people have had the privilege of competing in a race against an Olympian. Even fewer could say they raced alongside 13 time Olympic Gold medalist Michael Phelps. But that is where Mines junior swimmer Matt Bisping found himself when he lined up against Phelps at a USA Swimming Grand Prix meet in 2009. As Bisping remembers, “I didn’t stand a chance.”

You cannot hold it against him though, because while Bisping was racing in his first few competitive swim meets, Phelps was well on his way to earning a record seven gold medals in Beijing. Bisping has not wasted any time since then, finding success in his career as an Oredigger.

Geek of the Week: Mark Taylor, Grad, MME

The man is second-year graduate student in Materials and Metallurgical Engineering program Mark Taylor. The myth is that grad students never emerge from the caverns of their work. The legend is people surviving the graduate program at Mines. Despite the rigor of his studies, Mark somehow manages to keep himself active outside the classroom, and in good spirits. This interview finds him in his office, at an intermission of his work.
