Softball Takes Two at Colorado Christian

The Lady Orediggers went to work on the road, winning both games of their Saturday doubleheader against the Colorado Christian University Cougars. RMAC pitcher of the week Kelly Unkrich won her ninth game, giving up the two runs on five hits with five strikeouts in a complete game. The undefeated senior righty’s ERA is still at 0.77 after giving up the two runs in the seventh inning. The Cougar’s two runs came off of a double after a batter was hit by a pitch and another walked.

Mines grabbed the lead 1-0 in the fourth, and added another in the fifth. CCU tied it with their two-run seventh, pushing the game into extra innings, but the Oredigger offense answered back in the top of the ninth. Freshman Elise Dugwyler started the rally off with a bunt single. Macy Jones then singled to the left side of the infield. Kamee Vessey walked, loading the bases for Sami Springer, who doubled to center field, as Dugwyler and Jones trotted in to take the lead back. Mines added an insurance run as Molly Thiebaut drove in Vessey on a fielder’s choice.

Ashley Goletz picked up the ball in the second game, giving a solid performance as well. In completing the game, the senior righty gave up six hits and allowed two of the runs, as one came on an error in the first inning.

The Oredigger offense was led by center fielder Vessey, who went three for three with a double and a triple, Theibaut, who went three for four including two home runs, and Springer who had two hits including a triple. The third and fifth innings were big for Mines. Vessey led off the third with her triple to right center, and Springer followed with a single to score her. Springer would later score on Theibaut’s home run over the right field fence. Vessey got the offense going in the fifth, leading off with a double to right center field. Melissa Marshall also doubled to right center, scoring Vessey. Theibaut then came up and blasted her second homerun of the game scoring Marshall.

The Orediggers take on Adams State at home next Saturday and Sunday with another pair of doubleheaders. Mines hopes to continue their success after having their most successful beginning of the season and making their way into the NFCA DII Top 25 at No. 12 last week.
