Gear Review: Sony HDR CX230 Camcorder

For the average person with a smartphone, such as Apple’s iPhone or any other similar product on the market, purchasing a dedicated video camera will never be necessary. The video qualities on most phones people have is fairly respectable and videos can be directly uploaded to the internet straight from the phone. Despite all this convenience, for other people wishing to take on more involved video projects, the CX220 and the CX230 give a great deal of power and really cool features other multipurpose devices cannot offer.

Book Review: A Pebble in the Sky

Although Isaac Asimov’s A Pebble in the Sky may appear to be an everyday sort of science fiction novel, this short but poignant story is anything but. Set on Earth in the far distant future, this book is the story of an ordinary man in 1949 who is accidentally sent forward in time to a nearly unrecognizable Earth. In the future, the human race has expanded to inhabit more than 200 million planets, all of which are part of the Galactic Empire. Earth is regarded as an insignificant “pebble in the sky” and is ruled by an extremely strict religious sect. Under this theocracy, the people of Earth are subject to “the Sixty,” mandatory euthanasia for all people over the age of sixty. As it happens, this sect also has serious plans to overthrow the rest of the human race through the use of mass biological warfare.

Comic Corner: The Flash – Dead Heat

The story begins with Wally West on a date with his girlfriend, Linda Park. Wally is saved from a serious conversation by a timely attack from a pair of super-speed ninjas. Wally stops the attack, but one ninja gets away. At this point two of the other speedsters, Jesse Quick and Jay Garrick, arrive to tell Wally that nearly all known speedsters besides himself have suddenly and inexplicably been cut off from their speed. Wally interrogates the remaining ninja and finds out that the man responsible for the speed drop is named Savitar and that he seeks to take the gift of speed from all those who he deems unworthy before the ninja literally ages to death in Wally’s hands. Wally and the gang race to warn fellow speedsters Max Mercury and Impulse only to find ninjas already there surrounding Impulse and his speedster cousin, XS.

Dystopian science fiction with a promising future

Divergent by Veronica Roth is a young adult novel set in a dystopian future. Society has been reformed into factions. Each faction is defined by a certain value: selflessness, bravery, knowledge, truth, or peacefulness. It is a world where people conform to a set way of thinking and lifestyle. Divergence follows the coming of age of the book’s young heroine, Tris. She is Defiant, not restricted to a certain value or mindset. She leaves her sheltered life and is thrown into a world where she must discover her own identity and survive people’s fear of her inability to conform.

Comic Corner: Batman – Lovers and Madmen

Lovers and Madmen opens with Batman surveying Gotham City, pondering the difference between silence and quiet. Silence, he claims, “has a hum behind it. A nervousness. The fear of making a sound,” while quiet is “absence. It is rest.” He finds himself satisfied that his massive efforts to fight crime are finally paying off. Meanwhile, across the city, the story introduces the reader to a bored career criminal named Jack who is ready to give up on crime and life until an encounter with Batman reinvigorates him and inspires him to start a new crime spree that terrifies the citizens of Gotham.
