The stars shine brightly above Mines: Hot fun on the first rock from the sun

Welcome back astronomy fans and space buffs. This semester the focus of this section will change just as the stars above change. Where last semester there was a large focus on constellations and deeper sky objects this semester we will turn our sights a little bit closer to home. Expect to see articles on planets, moons, rockets, the auroras, and maybe a little bit about black holes. So without further delay, get ready to turn your eyes to the stars above Mines.

Game Review: Golden Sun III sadly disappoints

The Golden Sun Series has been a dependable Japanese-style role playing video game (JRPG) from its first release for the Nintendo Gameboy Advance (GBA) in 2001. It was shortly followed by Golden Sun: The Lost Age in 2003, which was also released for the GBA. The newest installment of the series is Golden Sun: Dark Dawn, which, unlike its predecessors, was released for the Nintendo DS in 2010. Generally, if a game takes 7 years be released, it should be held to a higher standard than one that takes only a year to come out. Golden Sun: Dark Dawn is a good game in its own right, but there are many drawbacks to the third installment of this series.

Music Review: The summery sounds of Tennis

Some have called it a phenomenon; others claim they’re nothing more than a buzz band. In any case, the dramatic rise to the national scene by Denver-based Tennis is worth a second glance. Their story is classic (if not overly romantic): a young couple with no money took to the sea on a ship named Cape Dory. Over the course of their adventures they were married and inspired to share their stories in the form of a few songs.

Beer Review: Mexican dark lager comparison – Dos Equis Ambar vs. Negra Modelo

In 1864, Emperor Maximilian I left his native Austria and seized power in Mexico, bringing with him Polka music, the backing of the Habsburg and Bonaparte dynasties, and a love for dark Vienna lagers. His personal brewery continued producing Austrian-style beer after Maximilian’s execution in 1867, and today, several Mexican breweries produce the style, the chief two among them being Negra Modelo and Dos Equis Ambar. Both beers shed aristocratic pretensions long ago and today they can be enjoyed even by those with more proletariat budgets.

The stars shine brightly above Mines: Planets

It is pure providence that here in the solar system that the Earth is not the only planet. While some of the larger planets play the benefit of clearing out major debris, from the perspective of our home, these celestial bodies form an amazing variation to the eternal night sky. Before humanity had the knowledge of what the true nature of these bodies were, it was believed that the planets were wanderers of the sky since over the course of a few months, they move and over longer periods of time the planets can even appear to speed up and slow down.

Music Review: Sign No More

This week’s music review goes across the pond to Sign No More by the British group Mumford & Sons. A well-delivered collection of original songs that has steadily gained international popularity,Sign No More has established itself as one of the top albums available within the United States. It presents a folksy, upbeat style of music, utilizing purely acoustic instruments, yet avoids the typical “feel good” folk band. The combination of many of the songs’ subtle minor chord progressions and the deep, thought-provoking lyrics generate a much more complex and enticing sound; undoubtedly one of the prominent reasons for the album’s success. The audience is left with the impression that the members of Mumford & Sons are not merely trying to entertain the world, but to deal with heavy, real life problems, which in turn catapults the substance of Sigh No More to a higher level within the listener’s mind.

Movie Review: How the Grinch stole Christmas

Christmas is supposed to be a time of great cheer – a time for people to kick back, relax, and enjoy their family and the lack of homework. Of course, Christmas actually entails crazy shoppers, difficult finals, and everything but relaxing and caring about others. In fact, it is enough to make everyone feel a little bit grumpy. It is these times that require a movie to affirm and then melt the acquired cynicism. It is these times that require the original 1966 cartoon How the Grinch Stole Christmas.

Game Review: Hot Pursuit is on fire

A word of warning. If you are into heavy racing simulations, the arcade-style mechanics and heavy traffic of Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit may not be for you. Otherwise, another warning is in order: do not buy this game until after your last final; it is enough of a blast that unless you have a resolve of steel, you will spend an excessive amount of time playing this game. It is just that good.
