The Mines basketball squads completed a dominant doubleheader sweep over the visting University of Nebraska-Kearney Lopers Saturday at Lockridge Arena.
This past Friday, both of the Oredigger basketball teams faced off against Chadron State in RMAC competition at Lockridge Arena.
Last Saturday saw the Oredigger basketball teams in action for a doubleheader against RMAC rival Western State College at Lockridge Arena. The first game pitted the 6-12 Lady Orediggers against their 8-10 Mountaineer counterparts. Western pulled out a victory 83-78 in a game that was far more of a defensive struggle than the score would indicate. It was an intense, back-and-forth contest for the full forty minutes. The Lady Mountaineers jumped out to an early lead behind a barrage of three-point shots and a ruthless full-court press defense, and generally did an excellent job of disrupting the Mines offense for much of the first half.
Both the men’s and women’s teams pulled out thrilling victories in the opening weekend of the basketball season Saturday 11/19 at Lockridge Arena.
Sports are in a mess right now. The most popular stories on ESPN have more to do with off-the-court or off-the-field drama than actual game day scores. The NBA isn’t even going to have a season. Conference realignment in college sports has been entirely dictated by money without any regard to tradition. Rivalries are dying. Recruitment rules are becoming so numerous and strict that its no longer a question of if a school violated them but instead if they actually knew they were doing it. Sports as a whole seem to be going through somewhat of a slump, but then last week, the start of the college basketball season brought new hope to sports fans across the country.
The Mines’ men’s basketball team ended their season last Monday, but not before making school history one last time. Already breaking the single season record for wins, the Orediggers held on for a 62-59 win over Adams State in the opening round of the Division II NCAA Men’s Basketball tournament, earning the school’s first ever victory in the Division II form of March Madness.
The men’s basketball team’s journey to become RMAC Shootout champions fell just short at the hands of Fort Lewis Saturday during the championship game at the Pueblo Events Center in Pueblo, Colorado, with a final score of 72-67.
