Athlete of the Week: Jessica Stark, Senior, Soccer

For senior civil engineer Jessica Stark, playing for the women’s soccer team has been more than a game. “It is a great experience” the defender commented, “Everyone thinks that as a student athlete, you learn the most about your sport, but I learned more on how to be apart team, manage my time, make friendships, work together, and just how to do life.” Stark, entering her final year as a Lady Oredigger, scored a pivotal goal in last Wednesday’s home playoff game against Metro State that led to a 2-1 overtime victory for Mines. Over the last four years, she has shored up a solid defensive unit that sent the 2009 team to the Elite 8 in the NCAA division II tournament.

Orediggers remain undefeated In RMAC after win over Adams State

The Oredigger offense, known for its prolific attack and reputation for putting up points, struggled Saturday, so it seems fitting that a highlight of the game comes from the defensive side of the ball. Midway through the third quarter, CSM Senior defensive end Marc Schiechl wrapped up Adams State quarterback Trevor Eggleston for a 14 yard loss. It would appear to be a routine play for the senior, but the sack gave Schiechl 8.5 sacks on the season and brought his career total up to 42.5, breaking the current NCAA division II record. For Schiechl, the sacks have become a norm and have helped to anchor a strong defensive line that has propelled Mines to a perfect 7-0 record in RMAC play.

Athlete of the Week: Elizabeth Serra-Hsu, Senior, Volleyball

When Elizabeth Serra-Hsu arrived at CSM as a freshman in 2007 the women’s volleyball team struggled to a tough 11-20 record. Four years later, Serra-Hsu and her teammates have climbed back into the competition and brought respect back to collegiate volleyball in Golden. And on Tuesday, Serra-Hsu made her own personal mark in CSM volleyball history. With 13 kills against UC-Colorado Springs, she broke the all-time career kills record of 1433, a 13 year-old record set by standout athlete Jaime Henderson in 1997. Serra-Hsu currently has 238 kills on the season and has helped to lead the Orediggers to a 17-7 record with two regular season games left. Mines is currently ranked 4th in the RMAC and with only two games remaining, looks poised to make a solid postseason run. They are also currently ranked 8th overall in the Central Region, on the edge of continuing on to the NCAA Central region tournament. This year, Mines has been led in part by Serra-Hsu and will look to her to help lead them to success in their final games. For her effort, and her outstanding play through four years as a Lady Oredigger, Serra-Hsu is this week’s Athlete of the Week.

Men’s Soccer defeats UCCS 4-0

The Colorado School of Mines (CSM) men’s soccer team resoundingly defeated the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs (UCCS) Mountain Lions 4-0 October 15.
The game began in exciting fashion, when CSM freshman forward Baski Baker scored in the fifth minute. He was assisted by fellow freshman forward Tesho Akindele, in a play which was more effective than beautiful. This was Baker’s eighth goal of the 2010 season.

Mines football defeats Western State 39-13

Nothing seems to be able to stop the Colorado School of Mines football lately. The academic equivalent of this feat, in which the Orediggers have outscored their opponents 276-133, would be like getting 100% scores on every Principles of Chemistry exam. The trend continued Saturday as Mines defeated the Western State Mascots 39-13 at the Mountaineer Bowl in Gunnison, CO.

Athlete of the week: Megan Woodworth, Sophomore, Soccer

In a school famed for its solid educational background, it comes as no surprise that for the past three years the Colorado School of Mines Women’s Soccer team has produced the RMAC Academic Women’s Soccer Player of the Year. For the 2010 edition, it was CSM sophomore Megan Woodworth who received the honor. Woodworth, currently deciding between mechanical and chemical engineering majors, sports a perfect 4.0 GPA during her time at Mines. To qualify for an All-Academic honor, an athlete must complete at least two semesters at their school and hold at least a 3.30 GPA. A total of 11 athletes were named to the All-Academic First Team. Of these 11, Woodworth was the only student to be unanimously selected to the first team and one of only two to hold unblemished 4.0 GPAs.

Oredigger football upsets CSU-Pueblo 19-16 in Homecoming game

The Colorado School of Mines Orediggers pulled off an amazing win after a shaky three quarters of offensive play at Saturday’s homecoming game vs CSU Pueblo. The game, which marks the fourth for Mines in RMAC (Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) play, didn’t start well for the Orediggers. In the first drive, Mines was forced to punt on a fourth and long, setting CSU Pueblo up for an early field goal, which became the only score put on the board for the first 40 minutes of play. The Orediggers proved the stronger, though, refusing to let the Thunderwolves deny them their game.
