Geek of the Week – Katie Sexton (Junior, Civil Engineering)

Mines, as most people know, is positively brimming with geeks. However, it takes a special kind of person and a very particular kind of geek to take on the responsibility and sometimes insanity that comes with being an RA. Enter Katie Sexton, an RA from the proud hall of Randall who is most definitely geeky enough to earn her place in this school.

[Oredigger]: Why did you choose Civil Engineering?
[Sexton]: Because buildings and roads are so relevant. We use them all day; we use them every day. They’re applicable to all of us and that’s really cool.

What has been your favorite class so far?
Probably Soil Mechanics because in lab you get to play with mud.

Are you a geek and why?
Well, yes. I’ve played almost all of the Zelda games and the old school Pokémon games, [but] not the new ones because I’m not that hip. I love to read. Reading is my favorite.

What do you do with your spare time?
Hang out with freshmen girls that live on my floor, talk about life. I do it even when I don’t have enough time to do it.

What is your favorite thing about Mines?
I love that I can walk across campus and see tons of people. I know and I’m not just a number.

What is your greatest accomplishment?
Surviving three years at Mines.

Who would win in a fight: the guys from “Duck Dynasty” or the Nintendo “Duck Hunter” dog?
The “Duck Dynasty” guys probably [because they have] opposable thumbs.

If you could be dropped into any fictional universe, what would it be and why?
[The world of] “Harry Potter” for sure. I want magic and I want to be best friends with Ron and all them.

What do you like about being an RA?
I love midnight hallway parties with microwave Toaster Strudels and boy talk and…I don’t know how to explain it.

What is your best nerd moment?
I feel like I have a nerd moment every Tuesday when I finish my CAE homework that I spend six hours on and I’m like, “Yes, I’m so smart!”

Which would you rather hang out with: Harry Potter’s gang or the Fellowship of the Ring?
The Harry Potter people, although it’d be fun to go to the Shire, not gonna lie.

Do you have any plans for the future?
Getting older. That’s about it.

Do you have any advice for fellow geeks and Mines students?
Don’t take yourself too seriously. In five years all this stuff that’s stressing you out today is not even gonna matter anymore.

Do you have a favorite quote?
“Promise me you’ll always remember: You’re braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.” – Christopher Robin, “Winnie The Pooh”
